CD REVIEW: Harv - Must
By Ben Ohmart - 08/06/2001 - 09:58 PM EDT

Artist: Harv
Album: Must
CD Review: Fiddlers on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? No, this stuff is wild, raunchy fun straight from the frozen Nordic section of NorthSide, famous for its Swedish and etc. brand of World music. This time the ol’ Nordic Roots label has grabbed onto 2 fiddlers who saw as one. Magnus Stinnerbom and Daniel Sanden-Warg are the 23 year old youngsters who know enough to go back to the origin of sound to extract new excitement.

Most of the 47 minute disc is simply filled with the dueling viola d’amore (that’s a 17th century string instrument that’s played like a viola), though on occasion they will take an outsider into their midst for a trial on flute, guitar or percussion. The most notable of that type of jam would be the cleverly phrased ‘Baten (The Boat).’ No, it’s instrumental, like everything else here, but the 3 minutes past faster than a good poem eked out by an English actor. Magic to hear.

For this sort of classically realized olde worlde flavor stomp, the ears are much better judges than I. So, go cruise around the NorthSide site. Stop in at Harv and buy it. Then keep on marching. Ton of good, great, glorious stuff there.
