Rehashing the Hash & Refrying the Beans

If you're an aspiring artist who's been around for any amount of time, I'm sure that you've seen and read countless articles on music promotion and songwriting techniques and everything else for that matter. You're probably so sick of reading the same crap over and over that you are just about fed up. Well I don't blame you in the least bit. I'm not only sick of reading the same old rehashed crap, but I'm sick of writing it. Truth be told, there is only so much about the music business that anyone can teach you. The rest you are going to have to either learn for yourself, or not learn at all.

Most of what is written is a complete waste of time anyway. It's not that it's not good information. Most of it is excellent information. The problem is, most of you don't even bother to listen. Those few who do listen seldom bother to act. For the past several years, I've seen artists and musicians and managers and everyone else doing everything that won't get them attention and ignoring what will. Even with thousands of them reading my articles and discussing these topics with me, most are still sitting around with their fingers up their butts. Probably waiting for that magic promotion tip to appear in their email. It seems that everyone is looking for something easy that will make them a star over night. Sorry, not gonna happen folks.

I've always said that if you're too lazy for this business, you need to get the hell out of the way of those who are not. That means that somewhere around 90% of you are in the way. Yes, I said 90%! What the hell is the point of you being here and reading these articles if you're not going to do anything that you are taught? Knowledge is useless unless you use it!

So instead of being one of those who are sitting around wondering why everything you read is the same old rehashed bull shit that you've read before, maybe you should actually be doing some of what you read. Writers are making things extremely easy for you. Ten years ago you would have had to buy some guru's book for $29.95 in order to learn half of what you can today for free. Now instead of spending 30 bucks to do nothing more to further your career, you can just spend however long it takes you to read the articles in front of you and do nothing. How cool is that!?!

Believe it or not, rehashing these topics is a good thing. It give variances in experiences and ideas. There is also the fact that you are here today and gone tomorrow. Most articles are just boot camp basics for aspiring artists. They need to be drilled into your head until you get it! You are now reading what the next newbie-pukeface-rockstar-wannabe-music-business-mama's-boy-recruit-in-training-whining-little-sissy-ass-maggot will be reading next month. Hoooh Yah! And so the cycle continues...

Anyway, like I said before. There is only so much you can be told or taught about promotion, marketing and the music business. Promotion has been pretty much the same since the beginning. Your goal is to capture peoples' attention and to keep it for as long as you can. The idea is to get as much money from them as you can while you have their attention. The methods for doing that have changed very little over the past hundred years. Technology may open new avenues, but the basis is pretty much the same old rehashed, refried, regurgitated spew of endless advertising mumbo jumbo. That's life people. Not much you can do about it, but use it to your advantage. I'm sure there's an article about that out there somewhere.
