CD Review:
I enjoyed a lot about this record full of great rhythms and unusual instrumentation. The songs are largely atmospheric; sketches of moods with rhythms that draw you in, then lead you along with smoky female vocals.
The variation in arrangement and instrumentation on these songs is a major plus in my opinion. In different songs they have included djembe, conga, flute, recorder, bowed bass and a lot more. These players are first-rate and the beats are compelling.
Kat is the name given for the songwriter, who is also the keyboard player and lead singer. Her passion is evident in her vocals. It is obvious she feels what she is writing and singing and she never over does it. But at times her lyrics become either so simplistic or the opposite, so very cryptic, that some of the songs aren't as engaging for me as others.
One of the strongest songs to me is "Time", with a great rhythmic hook, intriguing arrangement, superb playing and singing, and her best lyrics. Another strong one is the final track "Breath Like The Sea" which is also probably the simplest and sweetest, emotionally. This is a very interesting CD and with some more lyrical surprises, their upcoming one could be marvelous.
