Artist: Frank Zappa
Album: Zappa Picks: By Larry LaLonde Of Primus
CD Review:
This is a great collection. Zappa is the best musician and composer. Ever. Rock will not see his kind again, especially since he was more interested in the music than the money, as his prolific nature suggests.
Two of Zappa's most conspicuous fans – Larry LaLonde of Primus and Jon Fishman of Phish – have come out with their picks (not hits, but what FZ means to them) of the best from Zappa’s 40+ albums. Each new cd is over 70 minutes. Overall, I agree with Larry’s picks more than Jon’s. Perfect way to start is on ‘Five-Five-Five,’ an instrumental guitar piece from Shut Up an’ Play Yer Guitar. Inclusions of classy instrumentals like ‘G-spot Tornado’ from Jazz From Hell are also welcome.
Trouble is, of course, all of these goodies have seen the light of release before. We need more concerts, more NEW material or versions, not more compilation albums. That’s the only thing I have against this cd; and truth be told, that means I have a LOT against it. But it’s good to hear the ol’ tunes again.
