CD REVIEW: Joanne Stacey – “Fly Or Fall”
By Stacey Board - 12/11/2002 - 11:09 PM EST

Artist: Joanne Stacey
Album: “Fly Or Fall”
CD Review: This song reminds me of one Indigo Girl strumming. “Fall or Fly” is a collection of acoustic guitar based message driven songwriting. Very positive and uplifting themes are covered here, such as angels, true love, passion, and women of substance. Even when the topics touch on addiction, the focus is on overcoming it, not dwelling in it.

She makes two specific statements about women of substance, once with humor and once with poignancy. The first, “Barbie Drives a 4x4”, is pretty self explanatory and it’s a nice twist on the stereotype doll. The second, “Woman of Substance” is one of my favorite tracks on the CD. She writes about three different women and how they inspire her and contribute to her idea of what a true woman is. Again, she discards stereotypes and explores some real women and celebrates them. It is very honest writing and the women ring true.

Another one of my favorites is “24/7”, one of the rarer upbeat tunes on the CD. Joanne’s voice really shines on this song and the energy on the song is contagious. Joanne has a rich bluesy voice with lots of power and soul, and it in my opinion its showcased at its best in the more upbeat tunes.

Talented players are all over the CD, and the production is solid. She keeps it honest and simple in the arrangements which suits the music and the messages.

If you like acoustic based songwriting with some interesting insights and messages then you will enjoy this CD.
