CD REVIEW: Remedy Motel, "6 Days In Westchester"
By David Lockeretz - 01/09/2003 - 04:06 AM EST

Artist: Band: Remedy Motel
Album: 6 Days In Westchester
CD Review: Listening to this CD was a very enjoyable experience. These guys know how to write songs, and how to play them and sing them. Remedy Motel's style nominally could be described as modern folk-rock, but within this category, the band shows a lot of variety. While the majority of the songs show the influence of artists such as the Jayhawks, John Mellencamp or Bruce Springsteen, there are exceptions. "Side Walk" has a distinct reggae feel and "Tide of Day" sounds like a modern interpretation of Rubber Soul-era Beatles. The harmonica on "Changin'" brings James Taylor to mind. Yet Remedy Motel has their own original sound, paying tribute to their influences without copying them.

Another thing I like about the CD is the way that the musicianship is solid without calling attention to itself. The harmonies are strong without sounding too processed. The instrumental musicianship is tasteful and the production is clear and precise without being cute.

Some of the songs are better than others. I found "Came To You" a little monotonous and "Beautiful Cage" a little too ironic; it lacked the honest, road-weary narrative of the stronger material on the CD.

Overall the caliber of the music is high, however, and I look forward to hearing more from Remedy Motel. For more information about Remedy Motel, visit or
