CD REVIEW: Richard Shulman – Light Music
By Ben Ohmart - 02/12/2003 - 04:09 PM EST

Artist: Richard Shulman
Album: Light Music
CD Review: Light Music from prolific lite-sounds-man Richard Shulman is the sort of music that should be put on in the background. Then what? Whatever you want. While some will criticize the new age genre as being wallpaper or background noise, I ask: what’s wrong with that? It depends on the listener. Some souls need metal, some need the latest pop charts, others need to be babied, they need the gentle cycle. Blame people, not this music.

For this 70+ minute release is aimed at relaxation, contemplation and what Richard deems ‘the awakening of inner joy.’ It is for those who like sound, the idea of sound, the constant probing of it, the fish tank motion to the ears that allows breathing to regulate and which emits a calming influence on otherwise too fast or sad lives.

This goal is Shulman’s life’s work, and if you go to his website, you’ll see an entire catalog of such helpful pills. Like the FDA warns on vitamins, it may not help, but it won’t hurt. The music here goes a step further: perhaps you can’t gauge the significance such sounds apply to your life, but hadn’t you at least better try?
