By Ben Ohmart - 03/29/2003 - 10:59 AM EST
Artist: The Stan Bock Ensemble
Album: Night Grooves
CD Review:
It seems sacrilegious to listen to a CD like this first thing in the morning, but in these days of murder for oil, I just needed something soothing to start the day… I got it in the form of this new release. What a little piece of instrumental heaven this is.
1. Night Flight From Nairobi 4:26 2. I Thought About You 7:03 3. Ah Que Linda 5:17 4. Ms. Bea Goes To Tea 5:46 5. Stanadelic 4:00 6. Reflections 3:36 7. Sho ‘nuff Did 5:53 8. Gabby’s Getaway 4:27 9. Unauthorized Funk 7:48 10. Escapee 7:29 11. Straight, No Chaser 5:26 12. Groovin’ With J.R. 4:20
are played by
STAN BOCK trombone, euphonium (9,10) THARA MEMORY trumpet WARREN RAND alto sax RENATO CARANTO tenor sax JATTIK CLARK tuba (1,4,5,9) GEORGE MITCHELL piano & Hammond B-3 organ DAVE CAPTIEN acoustic bass & 5-string electric bass MEL BROWN drums CATON LYLES congas (3,8)
and NIGHT is completely highlighted and underlined. Once ‘I Thought About You’ makes it into the arena, all becomes a glowing dark, and the only light comes from Thara’s solo trumpet, while bass and piano applaud ever so lightly from the undisclosed background.
I’ve come to expect great things from Origin Records over the years. They haven’t disappointed yet. And Stan Bock and company can’t. Not with This mellow mood and flawless realization.
