Artist: Shane Simpson Album: “more electric” CD Review:
What really stands out for me on “more electric” is Simpson’s versatile guitar playing. He reminds me of Richard Thompson fingerstyle one minute then Eric Clapton bluesy, then rockabilly the next. He’s a very fine player and the CD makes me want to check him out live sometime! But Ottawa is a long drive.
Simpson has gathered some great accompanying players and the recording is A Plus. Simpson did an excellent job of self-producing this CD. It sounds professional and sophisticated with lots of heart and soul evident in all the playing. It's easy to try to ‘color in the lines’ in a recording and lose the heart somewhere, but Simpson has captured great energy in each song.
His lyrics though are lost on me. They are kind of free form imagery that obviously connect for him emotionally but don’t connect for me. Still, lots of people loved Duran Duran and their lyrics never made any sense to me either.
“more electric” is a solid collection of songs full of lots of heart and energy, and exceptionally versatile guitar playing.
