Artist: P.B.K.
Album: "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth"
CD Review:
Genre: Rap Sounds Like: Do Or Die/Crucial Conflict/E-40 Technical Grade: 5 Production/Musicianship Grade: 7 Commercial Value: 7 Overall Talent Level: 7 Songwriting Skills: 6 Performance Skill: 7 Best Songs: Set It Off, Game Over, Cali Bomb, Ah-Ha, Get Paid. Light Em Up, Ja Bless Me Weakness: Atrocious engineering job/too many songs CD Review: I don't know if rapping hell of fast is still in style, but these guys sound good doing it...unfortunately, the sound quality of this CD is so wacked, that I had to do a major adjustment job on my high-end stereo system to make it sound semi-decent.
It's a good thing I did. Otherwise, I would not have heard one of the best raps - lyrically, musically, and vocally - that I have heard all year. FNF & Infamous Mobb have a monster radio hit on their hand...if they get it properly mixed and mastered.
There were 20 tracks on this projects - which is way too many. On the strength of the songs that I have mentioned thus far, I continued to listen; however, be admonished that industry people will NOT sift through this material to get to the last, and the other commercially viable song on the disc, " Ja Bless Me," which has a haunting reggae undertone.
Advice: Cut the songs in half on your next project - or have just as many guest artists, and get them to chip in on the mixing and mastering.
