Artist: Mike Brosnan Album: "Wasted Time" CD Review:
Mike Brosnan has a bit of Eric Clapton in the acoustic guitar playing and a little of a Pete Townsend quality in his voice. Both are quite pleasing. His acoustic playing is very good as are all the other musicians' performances on the CD. The recording is pro quality but happily the edge and energy were not overproduced out of it. They worked it 'til they got it right and it shows.
The songs range from sweet acoustic fingerstyle ballads to the strong bluesy "Slide Action Man". There is an energy in the arrangements that make this more a soft rock sound instead of a folk sound which really appeals to me. The guitars add a lot of flavor without ever overshadowing his vocals and lyrics.
There is a humor and sweetness that comes across in Brosnan's lyrics that helps him have a sound that is his own. Some of my favorites are "End of the Game", "Bad Girl" and the title track "Wasted Time". He knows when to reach for the electric and rock it out and when to reach for the acoustic and keep it simple. Brosnan is a versatile songwriter with a great sounding CD in "Wasted Time". If you're a fan of Pete Townsend's solo work you should definitely check out this CD.
