Artist: Arlon Bennett Album: “The Watch Man” CD Review:
This is what I call contemporary folk, story based songwriting. The acoustic guitar playing and the vocals are meant to be the centerpiece of the sound. The other instruments are subtle additions to enhance the voice and guitar. When there is percussion, it is very subtle.
There are songs here about varied subjects: from fishermen to the meaning of love and a humorous reflection on what would God might write if he wrote a blues song.
Bennett’s very fine acoustic playing really stands out on the CD. He has a versatility from fingerstyle to a more bossa nova feel on “Don’t Turn Back Now”. Bennett’s style bridges nicely the space between more traditional folk songs and a more updated style.
