By Ben Ohmart - 10/16/2003 - 01:52 PM EDT
Artist: James Cockerham
Album: Morning Meditation
CD Review:
Call it new age or call it Christian, but here we have an instrumental album of
Morning Meditation Sweet Hour of Prayer Blessed Assurance Take Me Back Be Grateful Just As I Am I Surrender All There’s Something About That Name Give Me a Clean Heart Hear Our Prayer, Oh Lord
It is a 40+ minute disc meant for the autumn – that lead-in time to Christmas when there is rebirth in death, the change of colors, when darkness falls earlier than before. The title is apt beyond measure. When the solo piano comes out at dawn, you just have to pause and listen before sipping the coffee and braving the cold to get the newspaper.
While James does venture into the keyboard world, he is certainly at his best when following merely the piano sound, as in the very beautiful ‘There’s Something About That Name.’ If there could be a hit single out of these 10 songs, my vote would go for that one. Romantic, a little high-falutin’, but there’s a simplistic, magical charm that at once brings back the wistfulness of youth to those of us who enjoyed it.
MM is one of 2 cds out from James Cockerham at the moment. And he’s on cdbaby.com so you can go sample the tunes before you buy (always a wise decision; don’t just read stupid reviews, people). He’ll charm ya.
