Artist: Christine Martucci Album: “mama says” CD Review:
Martucci has some serious pipes. Her singing voice is very powerful and agile with fuel to spare. The production team did a great job capturing her voice. They also assembled some fine studio musicians to add warmth and flavor to the songs.
Her songs are different shades of blues. There are some honky tonk sounding tunes, and a little latin flavor, and some rockers. The songs are mainly vehicles for her strongest talent, her singing voice. She strays into the strenuous emoting ‘thing’ sometimes, which happens to be a personal turnoff for me, but her singing talent is quite clear.
There are strong aspects to her songwriting, especially in “No More Draggin Me Down” when she makes the melody full of more surprises than some of the others. In all the songs she understands how to set up a blues groove and sing the bejezus out of it.
She was born with a gift of a voice and muscle to back it up. When her lyric writing and song composition skills catch up to that gift then the world better fasten its seat belt.
In summary, these are fair songs with great vocals and great musicianship. Fans of great blues singing will appreciate finding a strong new voice in Christine Martucci. She’s got a bright future and I look forward to hearing more of her.
