CD REVIEW: melissa warner – “orange”
By Stacey Board - 11/20/2003 - 10:09 PM EST

Artist: melissa warner
Album: “orange”
CD Review: If you know anything about garageband.com you have to know that it is fueled by reviews given BY musicians TO musicians. They can be the most merciless reviewers ever known to man.

This same bunch of musicians gave Warner’s ‘slim chance’ number one status on the site’s country charts. It was also selected as a song of the day on the site. That should give you a big clue to how good the CD ‘orange’ sounds, and how strong is Warner’s talent at writing. Even musicians like it!

But don’t let that scare you. You will like it too.

Warner assembled a large group of very talented players to add texture to the songs. David Prill is a real standout on the CD. His playing adds the perfect touch and decoration to the songs without ever getting in the way of Warner’s smooth vocals and intelligent poetic lyrics.

Although orange implies red and yellow, the songs are often, well, blue. There is a touch of twang in some of the songs and the general flavor could be described as alt-country, a la Wilco, Jay Ferrar, et al. But mostly it is just great writing and great playing, no matter what sauce you like on the side. Warner has way more than one woman's share of vocal and writing talent. 'orange' is packed with flavor and waiting for you to squeeze out all the great sounds.
