CD REVIEW: Hank Quillen– “Wings of Freedom”
By Stacey Board - 04/27/2004 - 05:11 PM EDT

Artist: Hank Quillen
Album: “Wings of Freedom”
CD Review: The songs are lovely with top quality players and arrangement. Their songwriting ranges from heartfelt ballads to bluesy muscle. The Nashville twang is sincere and well-done but so are the touches of rock, blues and soul.

My only beef with Hank is his lack of perfect pitch. I would like to hear him focus on tightening that up because it distracts me from enjoying the melody.

One of my favorite songs is “All I Want” because it is such a great bass groove and melody. I really appreciate the diversity of styles he subtly employs throughout the record.

His ear as a co-producer is wonderful. There are many subtle touches that add to the songs without ever getting in the way. This is not overproduced ‘pop country’ schlock, this is heartfelt songwriting with pleasing diversity and great production.
