Artist: Paul White Album: On The Detour CD Review:
At first listen this struck me as something that could be a Dire Straights lost demo tape. Its got a sophisticated bluesy jazzy feel to it throughout. There is definitely a depth here to White's influences and his own artistic voice.
The songs are based on acoustic guitar, and White's guitar playing is outstanding. He knows how to create a melody that is both memorable and unexpected. His playing is full and varied and doesn't require much embellishment in the arrangements.
The subtle touches that are included in the arrangements are all well chosen. They add to the overall mood of the songs and are never overdone. Even the backing vocal arrangements are completely tasteful and add just the right touch. The title track is a perfect example of White's great playing, singing and subtle instrument and vocal arranging. All of the players seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves and it shows.
"On the Detour" is a fine collection of well written songs expertly played in the finest tradition of singer/songwriters.
