Artist: Compilation: Grrrls With Guitars
Album: Volume 3
There is something in the air – Americana, roots, bluegrass, new-grass, alternative folk…it’s all new again. And it is nowhere more evident than the latest compilation disc from Vancouver based all girl songwriters’ showcase, Grrrls With Guitars.
Featuring a veritable who’s who of Western girl songwriters, the disc – Volume 3 in the long running series – does not disappoint. Starting with the Yukon’s own, Anne-Louise Genest and ending with up and coming Vancouverite, Christine Couture, this disc does not disappoint. There is something for everyone.
And there’s some pretty big guns on the CD. Greentara, just awarded a FACTOR loan to produce her next album; Po’Girl, the darlings of Nettwerk and folk festivals everywhere; Kim Barlow, another award winning Yukon native; Barley Wik, the boot-stomping new-grass kids from Victoria; Yael Wand, Wells native with the plaintive wanderlust voice; Coco Love Alcorn, smoky jazz singer with some impressive credentials and more.
I must admit that I am familiar with a lot of the singers on this disc and have shared the stage with a few of them. Kudos have to go to producer Nadine Davenport for keeping the series alive and well. Davenport also contributes a song called The Big Wet Moon.
In the press materials, other reviewers mentioned the overall softness of the disc. Having not heard the other two in the series, I don’t have anything to compare this one too. I would say lovers of alternative music will dig this one and should if nothing else, check out the website, the showcase or any of the other discs.
