CD REVIEW:Kalin Ivanov
By Francesco Emmanuel - 06/26/2006 - 07:41 PM EDT
Artist: Kalin Ivanov
Soloist, recording artist and cellist Kalin Ivanov has released his second album, simply self-titled, Kalin Ivanov. His previous album was entitled Kalin Ivanov, works for cello and piano.
The songs on this recording are haunting, melodic, smoothe and soft. The timings and mood of each piece differ. His style of playing is subtle yet vibrant, you can hear with utmost certainty how he executes the pieces with total finesse and precision. The songs hint of melancholy, which is just what I like.
Kalin is a native of Bulgaria and has been studying cello ever since he was six years old. He obtained his Masters in Music from Brooklyn College where he studied under Mario Feldman.
On this album, Kalin plays the classics by such names as S. Barber (Sonata, Op. 6), A. Vivaldi (Sonata No. 5 in E Minor), R. Schumann (Fantasiestucke, Op. 73) and J. Brahms (Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38). Accompanied by Dr. Emily White on Piano, a perfectionist in her own right, Kalin portrays his skill and professionalism on every song.
This album is ideal for sitting back on a quiet afternoon, reading the papers, or sipping a cup of tea, just relaxing. That's it, although I'm no expert on chamber music, I know skilled music when I hear it, and this album displays the timeless classics in it's purest form.
Kalin's passion for music has lead him all over the world, to date he has performed in Greece, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Russia and America. His work has been the subject of many radio broadcasts in New York and Russia. Currently Kalin teaches cello and chamber music at the Brooklyn Conservatory and Brooklyn College Preparatory Centre for the Performing Arts.
He has also appeared on his collegue's work Roumi Petrova, Project Bacillus Bulgarius, an album I also reviewed so I knew this album would be another cornerstone of classical chamber music.
Kalin has won various awards over the years, and is the founding member of Trio 'BG' Bulgarian Piano Quartet and the Forte String Quartet. He also performs as a soloist and principal cellist with the Manhattan Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra.
Kalin's life and his work is all about the classics.
