Songwriting Chat Logs

A Log of our 15th Guest Speaker, Songplugger and publisher, Sherrill Blackman- March 27, 2000.

A Short Bio:
Previously, the creative manager at Buckhorn Music, one of Nashville’s oldest independent publishing companies where he helped organize Kris Kristofferson’s song catalog in addition to songplugging, copyright administration, and licensing. By the time Sherrill left Buckhorn Music in 1994, he had completely reactivated the company and secured recordings in Country, Gospel, and Bluegrass, including three recordings by LeAnn Rimes on her independent album released in 1994. The first, “I’LL GET EVEN WITH YOU,” was included on her Curb Records debut album, BLUE (now at 6 million sold). The other two songs, “BROKEN WING,” and “SURE THING,” were featured on LeAnn’s second Curb album, THE EARLY YEARS. This album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Pop and Country charts simultaneously and is approaching triple platinum status.

Since November 1994, Sherrill has been busy with his own company, The SDB Music Group, which is home to three publishing branches and a professional songplugging service. Since its inception, he has secured cuts on major label artists such as John Michael Montgomery, Leann Rimes, Don Williams, Steve Holy, Trace Adkins, George Jones, Blackhawk and many more. His George Jones cut, “Sinners And Saints”, will be the next single, and the Blackhawk cut “I Need You All The Time” is currently climbing the charts. Sherrill’s many Gospel cuts include the #1 “The Journey” and the Top Ten, “Journey On Believer,” by Christian Country artist Melody Bieser.

First of all, a big thank you to Sara Light who was with Sherrill at the time to lend her assistance. Secondly, the chat went really well and I'm very pleased at the attendance. Everyone seemed to have lots of very interesting and thought-provoking questions and Sherrill dealt with all the fervor very well. :-) Thanks to all those who took part! For those of you that were unable to, here's a transcript of the event.

JodiMuse Good going, Nan! :-)

SongLush ? sorry
AK ?
cherry my question is how do you go about gettinf your lyrics heard to an artsit even if you are not the best vocalist but have the vision for it and know how you want the song to go
stephenb ?
cherry getting
JodiMuse Cherry? I'll go through this again - you type a "?" and I'll let you know when to go ahead, ok?
JodiMuse CC, go for it.
cherry a"?"
CC Sherrill, when 2 publishers are responsible for getting a song cut, what is the usual publishing split?
............................socretes joined.............
Kenna ?
............................Jetlag joined.............
sdb cc, is there one writer? two writers? which publisher is the song published with? you 're asking kind of a vague question
cherry how can i go about getting my lyrics heard once they are copywritten?
CC Sorry.. No contract, handshake, both know the other is pitching, song is on hold, one writer. Will the writer get any of the pub--or is it ok to negot. for it.
JodiMuse Cherry, please wait your turn, ok? It's coming. Promise.
Paddi zealous crowd tonite, I like it!
cherry sorry.
sdb cc, no contract??? whoa, that's tricky. who had it first?
CC One person is responsible for getting the demo done a certain way--the other for getting it to the artist's brother.
............................TT joined.............
sdb cc, without knowing the spefics, it's hard to give one answer that covers the entire sitution. I, as a publisher would not work this way.
CC I understand!!! Thank you.
JodiMuse Are you done then, CC?
CC For now--more later!
JodiMuse :-) ok. Your turn, SongLush!
SongLush Sherrill the International Songwriters Assoc. copyrighyt music for members free. Is this safe they are located in Ireland?
CC ? for later Jodi
sdb songlush, why would you copyright a song outside the US? Do you live in Ireland?
JodiMuse You'll be after Kenna, CC. I've made a note of it.
SongLush No I dont but its free.
............................ebeneezer joined.............
SongLush I copyright here as well but was curious if I could get by just copyrighting it through them.
CC thank you jodimuse
sdb songlush, to make a long answer fairly short. i believe you have to copyright songs in the country in which you live
............................PipNestella left.............
SongLush Would a publisher accept a song with copyrights in Ireland?
JodiMuse Sherrill, when you're done answering a particular question, can you type a (done) or something to that effect?
............................Weylan left.............
sdb songlush, probably not. I have to ask why you want to copyright the song. Is it being recorded for release.

AK I've had good luck cowriting while in Nashville, but have only written w/people I know. How do you suggest I set up writing sessions w/the ones I don't know? Through their pubs if they're staffers? Will SESAC help?
cherry don't forget me.

JodiMuse I haven't forgotten you, Cherry. You're after stephanb.
SongLush ? for later Jodi
sdb ak, if you are a sesac writer then give your rep a call to set up the cowrite possibility. most publishers only want their writers working with writers at other established companies.

JodiMuse Ok cherry. Go ahead.
cherry i would like to know how can i get my lyrics to the right people once they have been coprywritten?
sdb cherry, no one will handle just lyrics. You will need music and a demo. Do you have a demo of your songs.
sdb done
Slingshot286 Type HEREHey-how about some serious songwriting issues?
cherry i have a demo of them with idea music behind it but i'm not the best singer you know.
JodiMuse Slingshot, we have a guest speaker here. If you'd like to ask a question, please type a "?" and I'll let you know when to go ahead and ask your question, ok? Thanks.

Kenna ?
Nan hello TT
sdb cc, you may want ot contact Harry fox and consider working thru them
............................Beth left.............
stephenb ?
CC Final part of question--so it's likely better to work with someone else than do it on my own
............................heather left.............
sdb cc, outside of experience in rate quotes in other areas beside mechanical, they will be of help. Otherwise, you can probably handle it yourself thru Fox
CC Sherrill, thanks so much. Very helpful!

SongLush I see. Thanks Sherrill
JodiMuse Hmmm... I think he's gone now.
............................Beth joined.............
CC ? jodi--thanks
JodiMuse Ok. Let's go to gemini and if blue gets back, I'll fit him/her back in.
gemini I've written a song. Someone wants to record it. They ask" do you have it published" . Answer is no. My ? is this. At this point , why would I just give up 50% to someone else. Can I start my own publishing co . at that point in time and how do I do that?
............................cherry left.............
............................Weylan left.............
SongLush ? for later
............................Weylan joined.............
sdb gemini, if you're getting it recorded, then you probably wouldn't want to give up 50% unless you don't want to mess with all the paperwork, etc.
............................JeffM left.............
gemini It is filed with SOCAN(not a publisher) for airplay royalties. Is that all that is necessary?
sdb gemini, as for starting a publishing co., it's just a matter of filling out the paperwork with BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, SOCAN, etc.
............................JeffM joined.............
............................Slingshot286 left.............
sdb gemini, then it's a matter of issuing the mechanical license and hopefully collecting the royalties.

JodiMuse You're after grey, CC.

sdb grey, I've got close to three thousand songs right now, covering all tempos, styles, genres, etc.
............................WrghtOn joined.............
sdb grey, as for lunch with an A&R, just give them a call. Chances are, if they don't know you, they either won't return the call or politely refuse lunch.
Nan hello wrghton
greygossamer covering all? but what about my hit song!?
WrghtOn Hi all
greygossamer well, I do know this one A&R guy so will give it at shot!
Nan i'll have lunch with ya grey!!
greygossamer wooo hooo
JodiMuse Hi Wrght. If you have a question, type a "?" and I'll let you know when to go ahead with it, ok?

sdb grey, that's a joke
Nan lol@sdb
WrghtOn ok thanks
greygossamer am laughing!
greygossamer and crying
greygossamer LOL
JodiMuse :-) On to CC?
CC Up until now I have let artists with no record deal put my songs on the demos they shop to labels, but with a substantial "hold" and a new batch of songs, is it best NOT to let people put them on their shop-to-label demos? Or does this just get my songs heard more?

greygossamer by the way, thanks sdb!

Nan hello finn
sdb cc, no you can do this. I do this all the time. I don't give holds though.
Finn hello everyone!
JodiMuse Hi Finn.
CC So if a major artist asks for a hold, you say No?
sdb cc, I only give holds to artists who have deals. But it's a great way to get your songs heard. This is how i got my LeAnnRimes cuts
Finn First time here, looks like a friendly croud
sdb done

JodiMuse lol You got the hang of it already. ;-)

JodiMuse Ok mike - you're up.
JodiMuse Oops! I think he's gone too! Ok.... TT?

Canuck Sorry Jodi, I got disconnected. My question is, who is going to really big in country--one year from now. Give us some names please.
sdb finn, I don't see a conflict. the pitch avenues are completely different. Unless you sign away the download rights
Finn ok thanks
JodiMuse Did you catch Canuck's question, Sherrill? Don't know if you can help with that one...
sdb canuck, i don't have a crystal ball. I can give you a few names of artists I like that haven't come out yet
sdb canuck, eric heatherly, darryl worley, tammy powell, steve holy, ...........me
Canuck I remember a Nashville publisher talking about the Dixie Chicks in April 1998. I'd have invested in peroxide if I knew then what we know now.

JodiMuse Ok - SongLush, go ahead.
SongLush Sherrill have you ever heard of Molly-Ann Leikin? If so are her songwriter services worth paying for?
Canuck You should talk to her then. Soon.
Nan Eric Heatherly is fantastic..i saw his showcase at tootsies and he knocked me dead..I was disappointed at what he debuted with
sdb songlush, didn't she write a book about ten years ago? what has she done lately
SongLush She has a conslulting business for songwriters
JodiMuse Most of the stuff she does now is online, Sherrill.
sdb songlush, what has she done lately?
SongLush I dont really know if she has done anything lately, just wondering if you knew
sdb songlush, I'm being sarcastic
SongLush Oh!!
............................Beth left.............
greygossamer hard to be sarcastic in here LOL can't hear your voice
sdb songlush, not to put anyone down who consults, but it's usually folks who either can't do it or haven;t had success in awhile
Nan i heard it fine lol
SongLush O.K. thanks again Sherrill and goodnight all
JodiMuse It's the battlecry of the industry - what have you done lately . ;-)
JodiMuse Bye SongLush!
Finn ?
JodiMuse Nan, go ahead.

Lisa ?
sdb nan, sometimes a song is released as a sacraficial lamb. then the follow up is the monster. in eric's case I don't know
............................Beth joined.............
JodiMuse Sacraficial lamb? Could you explain that, Sherrill?
sdb nan, i've heard everything he has ever written. I used to go see him at tootsie's when there were only eight of us in the whole room
Nan he is a very sweet person and knocked me cold with his performance..Mercury had better not screw that one up!!
sdb jodi, sometimes a label will use a single to test the waters and just try to get an artist a little exposure. then they will come out with what they hope will be the smash
............................AK joined.............
sdb done
............................Canuck left.............
JodiMuse I see. So they'll frequently use a cover to make people comfortable with the artist before releasing the hit single?
CC Ak, finally!!
Nan thanks sdb
sdb jodi, not necessarily a cover. just a single to get the exposure
............................TT left.............
............................Quelyn joined.............
sdb jodi, there are different philosophies about this. will take too long to cover here
sdb done
JodiMuse Ok. Was just curious. Onward and outward. :-) CC, you're up.
Beth ?
CC Sherrill, what is the heirarchy of HOLDS--A& R, producer, artist, etc?
sdb cc, great question.
CC thank you. I aim to please.
greygossamer cc is my friend she asks great q's
sdb cc, I will honor an artist hold with utmost respect, then producer, then A&R
sdb done
CC Thanks you much!
JodiMuse Go ahead, Finn.
Finn Its a long one...I currently have a country demo, midi bass and drums, real acoustic guitar, vocal has just a little bit of twang but no steel guitars, but I think it has enough country feel, Ive got some feedback that it isn't country enough, but with the big, country/pop crossover I think it is,...I dont know any comment or suggestions or advice on this topic??
sdb finn, my feeling is this, you're trying to showcase a song, not production. Unfortunately, most people can't hear the song any more.
CC amen
Finn Like Say you have a song that could go either way, soft pop or country,... and you only make one demo,.. so you go down the middle, is that a good choice?
sdb finn, my favorite saying is "do what's best for the song". Does this demo show the song off in the best possible way, if not, then maybe another demo will help
Nan do you have a publisher you are working with finn?
Finn man, i guess your right. Thanks.
sdb done
JodiMuse Your turn, Lisa.
Finn Non exclusive
............................Babe left.............
Lisa Sherrill - do you know who Jamie ONeal's and Tammy Powell's publishers and/or personal managers are? They are too new to be in my Music Industry books....or do they both write their own material exclusively?
............................Babe joined.............

Finn Nan, Ive been more in the Canadian Market, so Iim pretty new to the Nashville Market
sdb lisa, I don't know Jamie. I do know Tammy, but not her mgr. Tammy writes most of her own material

JodiMuse I learned it with French being the next line, Finn. *chuckle*
JodiMuse Don't you know to "Blame Canada"? ;)
sdb jodi, c'mon I'm waiting forquesitons here.

greygossamer sdb is being sarcastic again I just KNOW it!
IreneJ Yeah, that was a Canadian "outburst" for sure, Jodi :-)

JodiMuse Sorry, Sherrill. Just poking a bit of fun. :-) Go ahead, Beth.
Beth Hi Sherrill....If you gave your lyrics to a co writer for music and that person disappeared for the last 3 months, is it o.k. to move on to another co writer? Will that first person have any rights to your song?
sdb beth, have you exhausted all ways of contacting this writer?
sdb beth, if so, I'd move on.
jp Type HERE?
jp "?'
sdb done
Beth O.K. thanks Sherrill...I just didn't know if there might be a legal problem later on if the song ever got accepted
JodiMuse Ok CC. Your turn.
AK ?
CC Sherrill, once something on hold, what can the writer do to further promote chances--and how can that factor into getting other songs listened to?
............................Quelyn left.............
sdb cc, do you mean on hold with an artist? If so, then the best thing is to stay out of the way.
............................earl joined.............
Nan hello earl
sdb cc, this level of success however, can help open doors to submit more songs for that project
sdb done
CC Yes, with an artist. It's just a waiting thing then? If the publisher must represent their staff writers
............................Kerry joined.............
CC and doesn't have room for one more, then I can use the hold clout to get in other doors?
Kerry hi everyone
JodiMuse Hi Kerry. We have a guest speaker tonight so if you have a question, type a "?" and I'll get to you, ok?
Kerry ok
sdb cc, one of the most frustrating things about this business is waiting. I have to do it every day with songs that are being tied up by various artists.
sdb cc, and yes it can help open other doors.
sdb done
Paddi Gee what a terrible dilemma Sherril
Lisa ?
CC I'm gettin it. Just want to know how to further the progress of the other songs!!
JodiMuse Ok jp - go ahead.
jp I have written the lyrics and chord structure/melody for a number of songs our band is going to record. band members have fleshed out the songs and added some fills and riffs so now i am not sure how much credit to give....advice?t
sdb jp, wow, this is tough.
greygossamer don't say that!
jp yeah, for me too
Nan are we cyberlocked
sdb jp, this is kind of the scenario that Charlie Daniels went thru with Devil Went Down to GA. It depends on how much credit you

............................JeffM left.............
JodiMuse If I may... jp - if those songs would be able to be brought to another band in their raw form and played elsewhere - if they stand by themselves without all the fancy fills and riffs, then they're yours - but if you feel that what the others added really *makes* the song, then share the credit as you see fit. Make sense?
CC ?
JodiMuse Sorry - wanted to just sort of add my 0.02 cents there. Even if's measely little Canadian cents. ;-)
jp I want to be fair and i don't want to cause dissension. the songs are really mine but there are egos involved and i am not sure how much credit is due
greygossamer LOL jodi
Finn LOONIES BABY!
CC for what it's worth, it's good to get that stuff straight up front
sdb jp, if the major sections of your songs are yours, then they are only helping you organize and arrange them.
JodiMuse You know the situation better than anyone, jp. But if these songs are going to go somewhere, yeah - I definitely agree with CC. It's best to get these things ironed out at the very beginning.

sdb jp, thiis is not cowriting. If they are actually sitting down with you and giving valid input, then that is cowriting
CC you could pay them like demo players
sdb jp, egos can be a tricky issue. Have you discussed this with your bandmembers
jp SDB do you mean legally?thanks
............................gemini left.............
sdb jp, it all boils down to what you discuss and negotiate
sdb done

JodiMuse Ok AK - go ahead.
AK I met with the decision maker hiring new staff writers recently. She will be making final decisions in a month or so. What can I do/not do to maximize my chances of nailing this thing?
jp Ok, sort of what i figured. done
sdb ak, interesting question
sdb ak, stay in touch, but don't be a pest
CC fine line
AK I wrote w/a SongPlanet writer and they sent our demo to her....am I on the right track?
sdb ak, I'd periodically drop by to play new songs to this person to show what you're doing
sdb done
AK okay, thank you!!
CC beggin is out then.
AK lol
JodiMuse Go ahead, Lisa.
AK shoot
JodiMuse lol cc
Lisa A great Nashville songwriter told me once that to get in the "door" in Nashville your demos must have a very specific "sound". For ex., the fiddle must be played a certain way, etc. Do you find this to be true? I also heard that you really have to be in Nashville and perform at the Bluebird etc? True?
............................itsme joined.............
sdb lisa, who have you been listening to???????
Lisa Rick Carnes
............................Quelyn joined.............
IreneJ lol
sdb lisa, Rick is a fine guy and a great writer. it goes back to what I said earlier. do what's best for the song
Lisa Thanks much
sdb lisa, as for playing at the bluebird, that is absolutely not true. it's a myth that's been blown way out of proportion
............................earl left.............
JodiMuse Ok - anyone else with a question?
CC ?
Babe ?
AK ?
itsme ?
JodiMuse Go ahead, CC.
Quelyn ?
CC What is the single best thing a writer can do to get a staff deal--?
AK Ask and you shall receive!
AK get cut
JodiMuse Yup. That's what I did. ;_0
AK :)
sdb cc, how much money do you have???? (laughing)
AK LOL!!
CC Let me add--and will one cut get you in?
JodiMuse -giggle-
CC lol, still counting
sdb cc, the truth is just write great songs. that sounds cliche, but it's the truth
CC oh good. the couch thing is over, now it's about money
greygossamer ahhh cmon sdb
greygossamer lol cc
CC but do you ever get signed without a cut--or just one cut?
sdb cc, there is no one answer to your question. It works different ways. Each writer that has been signed will tell you a different story
sdb done

BJH ?
JodiMuse Ok Babe. Go ahead.

Finn Got to go, nice to meet everybody,...see you next Monday!
Babe Can you trust these ads in the internet for songwriters?
JodiMuse Bye Finn!
JodiMuse Save some of those red smarties for me, ok? ;-)
Finn Only the red ones!
JeffM bye finn
sdb babe, I don't know what ads you're referring to.
............................Finn left.............
JodiMuse I think she means the market information stuff that a lot of the newsletters and such send out these days...
sdb babe, what kind of ads
sdb next ?
Paddi There is one called "Paramount the nashville songwriting connection" that I was curious about too
Babe I've looked up song publishers on the internet and have found llots of ads for songwriters. I've written to a couple asking for permission to send a demo, and have not heard back.
............................itsme left.............
JodiMuse Babe, if they haven't written back, then it's their loss - or they may simply have already been inundated. As with anything, it's best to be cautious.
............................earl left.............
sdb babe, then you probably have your answer in your answer
Quelyn how long is a typical hold?
Babe okay, thank you
IreneJ Anyone and their uncle could call themselves a "publisher" too.
JodiMuse Quelyn, we'll get to you in a sec, ok?

............................jp left.............
Quelyn oop it was supposed to be private
sdb babe, i don't think it's a matter of trust. I don't know of many publishers who advertise on the net lookin for songs
Babe ?
JodiMuse Very true, Irene. The Internet makes that even easier.
sdb done
............................Nan joined.............
JodiMuse Ok AK - your turn.
AK How do we make the most of our P.R.O. affiliation?
sdb ak, good question
Beth ?
............................PlayfulOne joined.............
............................Nan left.............
sdb ak, this is a people business. get to know your pro rep. they can help refer you to publishers that may be listening
sdb done
Babe Can you give us some suggestions of reputable small publishers that we can write to for permission to send demos?
AK that they do, thank you
sdb babe, i don't keep up with what other publishers are doing, sorry
............................ebeneezer left.............
............................PlayfulOne left.............
JodiMuse itsme - go ahead.
CC ?
IreneJ itsme checked out already Jodi
greygossamer u sure u ain't usin' my songs?? :)
JodiMuse -sigh-. That's been happening to me all night. Ah well. Ok. On to Quelyn. :-)
CC bye grey!
greygossamer oops!
Quelyn How long is the typical hold?
sdb quelyn, there is no typical hold. I currently have songs on hold that have been so for a week, a month, two months
Quelyn I see...can it go 6 months- a year?
sdb quelyn, it depends on your relationship with the person asking for a hold. I wouldn't give a hold for a real long period of imte
Quelyn cool typo!
CC it's publisher lingo
sdb quelyn, six months or a year is too long. unless it's garth, the beatles or elvis
Quelyn thanks
sdb done
JodiMuse I think you'd be waiting a REALLY long time if it was elvis... ;-)
IreneJ ROFL
JodiMuse BJH, go ahead.
IreneJ An eternity :-)
............................BJH left.............
JodiMuse Ok. IS IT SOMETHING I SAID?? lol
............................BJH joined.............
JodiMuse There you are. :-) Want to try that again, BJH? You're up.
BJH I am so new, what do I do with the songs I have written?
CC grey, you're not on my list of people to click!!!

CC grey, I think it's my computer. . . bye!!
............................Quelyn left.............
............................greygossamer left.............
sdb bjh, first do you have a demo? If so, then you will need to contact a publisher to see if they will listen.
BJH I have a demo of one song... should I make a bunch?
CC of money, yes.
JodiMuse :-)
sdb bjh, if the publisher gives permission, then send and hope they can use it. If they can't, then repeat the process until you find someone who feels they can use it or you quit
BJH How do I match a publisher with my style(s)
............................IreneJ left.............
sdb bjh, if you have one song, that's a start. However, most people are going to ask "what else do you have"
BJH that would be nice!
JodiMuse Ok guys - we have about 5 minutes left here. Babe, you're up - then Beth - and then I'm afraid we're going to have to call it a night. Ok with people?
AK do we have a choice? :)
BJH Thanks!
Beth Sherrill, do you have a website? And BJH, there is a book called the Songwriters Market, that's a very good book for that.
sdb bjh, in the beginning it will be a matter of just finding someone willing to listen. If you feel you have song that fits a particular artist, then research to see what publishers have placed songs with that artist before and direct your efforts that way
............................gemini left.............
JodiMuse AK - not if you want to be invited back. -grin-
AK lol
............................gemini joined.............
Babe I don't have another question, but thank you for all the advice you've given to me and others Sherrill
CC akinvited?
CC ido, i do
AK weren't you?
sdb beth, nope don't have a website. I don't believe in the internet. It'll never last. just a fad!!!!!!!
AK LOL!!
JodiMuse Now THAT'S sarcasm. ;-)
JeffM uh oh
JodiMuse What Jeff?
gemini With your track record, you don't need a web site.
Beth O.K. thanks SB, really enjoyed hearing your answers to things...
sdb gemini, I will probably have a site one day. Right now, it's not a priority.
Kerry .
sdb don't tell me there are not any more questions
AK what do you look for in a staff writer?
JodiMuse You know what? CC ? Why don't you go ahead. I didn't think there would be time, but it appears there's time for one last one. :-)
CC Once you sign a song, what can the writer do toward helping get it cut . . . do you set up other meetings for them to play
AK I'm a broken record
gemini By the way, sdb, I have quite a few songs that you sent me for an artist. You have great songs.
sdb ak, I don't have any staff writers. I have only dealt with writers on a single song basis
CC it for a & r people or do they just need to stay out of the way? Songs i mean.
Beth Was just wondering if you had one that told about your publishing company
sdb cc, unless the writer has a direct connection with an artist that I don't have, I prefer that they stay out of the way
CC Got it. Thanks.
AK Thank you Sherrill
JodiMuse Alright folks. That's it for tonight. Thank you very much for coming by, Sherrill. We really appreciate the time you've taken to be here and answer our questions.
CC Thanks Sherrill.
sdb thanks everybody, good luck
BJH thanks!
gemini Sherrill, thank you for your time with us tonight.
