A Log of our 17th Guest Speaker,
Corrinne May - April 30, 2001.

A SHORT BIO:
Corrinne May's winning melody was the perfect match to the lyric posted by the two Caroles for a songwriting challenge issued by the music industry web-site TONOS.com, founded by legendary songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, composer/producer David Foster and songwriter/producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Corrinne is no stranger to songwriting contests, having won her first at 15. Over the years, she has added wins from the Unisong International Songwriting contest, the Berklee Songwriting and Berklee Performer/Songwriter contest. She is currently based in Los Angeles and has recently released her first album. Her songs have been heard on Lifetime TV's series "The Division" and on ABC's network TV drama "One Life To Live". They have also been recorded by artists in Asia and have found their way to the airwaves of Belgium, Holland and Illinois, Singapore and Taiwan. She has also been featured in showcases held by the Nashville Songwriters' Association, the Los Angeles Women in Music (LAWIM) and was a participant in the ASCAP 2000 Lester Sil Songwriter's workshop, a workshop whose famous alumni include Grammy-award winning songwriter Diane Warren.

JodiMuse Alright. So. To begin? TIMO, you had a question, right? Corrinne, as mentioned before, just type until you're done, and type [done] at the end so that we know you're ready for another question, ok?

Corrinne o.k

............................kk joined.............
Nan welcome to pro chat KK
Corrinne the last one I joined was a songwriting challenge for tonos.com, launched by carole bayer sager/david foster and babyface. The contest was to write a melody to pre-existing lyrics written by Carole King and Carole Bayer Sager, specially for the contest.
kk Thanks - I'm glad to be here. Bear with me as I get used to this
JodiMuse No problem, KK. We're a nice bunch. ;-)

AprilDawn Hey Lisa and Nobby
samsamba So Corrinne, is the tonos.com contest still going on. I've never heard of it.
LisaB Hi all - hey Nan
Nobby Hello all
JodiMuse Sam, you can have a look at http://www.tonos.com to see what's going on now. They have a bunch of different stuff.
JodiMuse Alright, Kenna - care to take the next question?
samsamba Thanks
Kenna which of the major contests do you think are the best to enter and why?
kk Corrine, what contests are good for new songwriters?
............................qp left.............
Corrinne The contests that I've heard about so far are the USA songwriting ,the john lennon songwriting, the Unisong songwriting contests. (more)
............................qp joined.............
JodiMuse KK, please wait your turn, ok? I'm going to let you go after Kenna though since TIMO's already asked a few questions. ;-)
kk OK
Corrinne And I think the answer to which is the "best" is actually based on each individual, (more)
LisaB ?
Corrinne for eg. find out if the prizes are attractive to you and if they will (more)
Corrinne help you in getting closer to your goal as a songwriter, be it meet more people in the industry or getting some cash (more)

danNsara sorry, got booted
JodiMuse No problem.
Corrinne I liked the Unisong contest because it offered the chance for the winner to co-write with some really famous and great songwriters, although the cash prize is not as much as the john lennon one, for eg.
............................SAGE left.............
Corrinne the john lennon and the USA contest have more in terms of cash prizes and sometimes, the nice thing about (more)
JodiMuse Nope. But the cool thing about UNISONG is that a trip was involved with it too. They took the winner to the UK or to CUBA or Australia... It was very cool.
............................popo joined.............
Corrinne contests is that people in the industry get to hear your songs
Corrinne and that can get you some valuable contacts
............................Lyric joined.............
JodiMuse The USA Songwriting Contest also has a radio show associated with it now. So the winners get radio play.

............................stephenb joined.............
kk Corrinne, what is the best way for a lyric writer to get started in contests? Are there good ones for beginners?
............................hatman left.............
............................hatman joined.............
Corrinne I'm pretty sure that the Unisong and the USA songwriting competition and the johnlennon ones have awards for lyricists ,so you could explore tha .I'm mostly a melody songwriter, so I haven't submitted any lyrics per se (more)
Corrinne there is a good one from ASCAP called the SAmmy Cahn award that goes to the best lyrics (more)

JodiMuse Remember to privately page yourself something, guys - otherwise the system will kick you off after about 10-15 minutes.
Corrinne the award goes to the best lyric submitted by a person who has taken part in one of ASCAP's workshops
kk thanks - that's great to know

Corrinne ASCAP has some pretty good workshops that are almost like "contests" to enter, because you do have to submit songs to qualify!

Corrinne and there is another based on the east coast. Check out the ascap web-site for details.

kk you're a huge help -thanks
JodiMuse TIMO? You had another question?
TIMO Do you write full productions for contests or just a melody line which will later be fully produced?
............................qp joined.............
ThePOet Sorry my friends, but this wee Poet must away. It's been fun talking to you again. Corinne thank you for the infrmation Good luck
Corrinne as full of a production that I can manage to get :)
hatman ?
AprilDawn night Poet
............................Nobby left.............
Beth goodnight Poet
Corrinne thanks poet. good luck to you too.
JodiMuse Bye Poet.
popo ?
TIMO Night Poet
Nan Night Poet, I'll checkout your page
............................ThePOet left.............
JodiMuse Why is that, Corrinne? What's your reasoning?
Corrinne I know that some people say that even with a piano vocal, they can hear the full potential of the song (more)
Corrinne However, I find that the more a song is "clothed" in the right type of arrangement, be it full band etc. ie. the more true the song sounds to the original "sound " that the songwriter hears in his head, the better it is for the listener to "get" the song
Corrinne Of course it depends on the song.
Corrinne Some songs sound great with just a piano and vocal (more)
Corrinne Also depends on what you're pitching the song for
Corrinne A song can be arranged as a country song, or a rock song depending on the arrangement.
JodiMuse Good advice. :-)
Corrinne Therefore, it can possibly be submitted to 2 totally different categories ina song contest!
JodiMuse

LisaB Yes - Corrinne What is your writing process - lyrics first or music first or both together?
kk Jodi - quick question - how do you keep from being kicked out?
Corrinne Usually, 90% of the time, I get the music first.
............................Angel left.............
Corrinne (more)
JodiMuse I've mentioned it a couple of times, KK. You have to keep yourself "active" or the system will kick you out after 10-15 minutes. Just highlight your own name in the User Info box, click the "Private Chat" location and then type a character to yourself. Anything. Every 10 minutes to be safe.
............................Angel joined.............
samsamba So, is this fun for you angel?
Corrinne HOwever, with some songs of mine like "Same side of the moon" and "fly away", I had the idea for the lyrics first (more)
kk thanks
JodiMuse No problem. :)
Nan or send me a private message, I talk back lol
............................Lyric left.............
JodiMuse Or you could talk to someone else, sure.
Corrinne and then the lyrics and music came together for the choruses, and then the lyrics for the verses came, and then the melody for the verses...etc:) it gets confusing sometimes :)

hatman Thanks. I'm new here. GOod stuff. Corrinne, how do you go about connecting with a co-writer.?
Corrinne I try to find out if we share any musical tastes, ie. what we were both influenced by musically, I find out as much about the songs they have written before meeting with them...(more)
............................gemini joined.............
Corrinne I try to come prepared to the table with a couple of ideas, either music ideas or lyric ideas ..
Corrinne try to get to know them as a person by just doing some small talk..
Corrinne whatever it takes for both of us to feel comfortable.
Nan ?
Corrinne Sometimes, it's difficult still :)
hatman So, do you meet cowriters through a publisher, or what?
Corrinne I've met co-writers through ASCAP, through publishers, through friends, through watching a singer-songwriter at a performance and asking them if they co-write, through classmates
Corrinne (done)
hatman Thanks very much.
JodiMuse Popo?
popo Corrinne, I am new to the whole songwriting deal, what basic skills do you need to write music (not lyrics), what instruments can you play? DONE
Corrinne you're welcome:)
............................danNsara left.............
Corrinne I play the piano, but recently took up a bit of guitar because I wanted to get beyond ballads LOL (more)
JodiMuse Ooo BOY do I know that problem, Corrinne.
Corrinne I found that by taking up the guitar, I was phrasing songs differently, trying new melodic and rhythmic ideas(more)
............................danNsara joined.............
Corrinne and I liked the fact that playing with the guitar inspired me to write more up-tempo songs
stinky wb
Corrinne I guess you need to keep an ear to the radio, and to your favourite music to get more into writing your own music (more)
popo did the writing skills just come along with learning the instruments? Done
............................lizcurli joined.............
Corrinne I think it was the other way actually (more)
Corrinne I heard melodies in my head that I wanted to articulate with an instrument (more)
Corrinne It definitely helps to know how to play an instrument though.(more)
lizcurli ?
Corrinne because sometimes, just by playing other people's songs, (more)
Corrinne you get inspired by the chord changes they chose, by the melodic ideas they had, by the melodic choices they made(made)
kk ?
Corrinne in fact, a lot of what I did when I was young was to transcribe the music of my favourite musicians on the piano, to learn from them.
Corrinne (done

JodiMuse Oops. I guess you ARE up, Liz...
JodiMuse I'll fit Nan back in whenever she makes it back.
JodiMuse What do you mean by "take you seriously" though?
lizcurli How do I get people to take me seriously?
Corrinne You mean take your music seriously, or take you as a person pitching your music, or being a musician seriously?
SAGE theres something happening here.......
lizcurli I mean taking my pitches seriously
............................Nan joined.............
Corrinne What has your experience been so far with pitching you music?
lizcurli I'm a beginner
Corrinne Well, my experience has been that if I am serious in my attitude, in pitching my music, if I have my songs crafted to a point where I know that they are the best that they can be (more)
Corrinne if I am playing my songs for the right people, ie people who understand what a good song is ,(more)
Corrinne I find that in that case, people will take me seriously. Also, know who your audience is for your pitch.
Corrinne I'm not going to pitch a heavy metal song to a children's publisher, for instance :)
............................kk left.............
............................kk joined.............
Corrinne does that answer your question?
lizcurli Thanx. So where do you recommend I pitch a song like R&B?POP
SAGE people want to hear music that makes their soul shine
Corrinne that's a good one sage.

Corrinne perhaps there is an artist that you have written the song for, then (more)
Corrinne if that is the case, perhaps you could find a way to get the artiste to listen to that song..although it gets increasingly harder, because you'll have to find an "in"
............................danNsara joined.............
Corrinne maybe you know someone who know's the porducer of the artist (more)
Corrinne I mean "producer"
lizcurli that's ok
Corrinne or perhaps you know a singer who is looking for songs (more

Corrinne i guess. But always be careful with any contract that you may sign. and copyright your material
Corrinne with the copyright office if you ca
Corrinne can
lizcurli Where can i find the office?
stephenb copyrights are running 3 to 8 months for returns... so be patient
Corrinne The Library of Congress division of copyrights has a website too. does anyone know the address?
Kenna one sec
lizcurli alrighty
JodiMuse Oh - The COPYRIGHT office. They have a url...
Cupid1D yes it's www.loc.gov

lizcurli thanx guyys
JodiMuse (laugh) Ok. There's the url. That's where you need to apply, Liz. They have tons of info there. There's also a new service out there that will file it for you - but it does cost money.
TIMO Liz try the "Songwriters Market", check at your local bookstore.
lizcurli I know it cost $, just testing you
Kenna especially sorry Liz

JodiMuse lol Well, I guess that's another way you get noticed... ;-)
lizcurli that's true timo

Corrinne I usually like to meet or know the person's songs before I can co-write with them. so maybe someday when I get to meet you and hear your songs liz, we could start co-writing
............................qp joined.............
Corrinne I also usually prefer to write songs alone and have only recently branched out (more)
Corrinne into co-writing. Not all co-writing relationships work out. Some can be very awkward :)
Corrinne (done)
JodiMuse Thanks for that, Corrinne. Mary?
Mary Thanks, Jodi.
Mary Corrinne, I have a question concerning different demographic groups and what they are looking for musically....
Corrinne o.k
Mary Although I haven't really researched this topic in great detail yet....
Mary My understanding, after scratching the surface, is that there seems to be ....
Mary a certain amount of uncertainty regarding what the 35+ age group is looking for right now, for instance (MORE)
Mary As well, I'm really unsure as to how to provide "inspirational" music to the under 35 age categories, i.e., what genre(s) might inspire them these days.
Mary Done
Corrinne Are you talking about inspirational as in Christian music/spiritual music or instrumental/new age?

Beth ?
Mary Well, I write a wide variety of music, including spiritual, but perhaps not to a large extent... not new age, though. (More)
Mary I was thinking more in terms of, say, can folk music vs., say, gothic or contemporary inspire the under-35 age category these days.
Corrinne And you want to reach the under 35 market because you have the impression that they are more into pop and not much into spiritual music?
lizcurli target
Corrinne oops. should have read the full question first :).. wait..
Mary My reason for wanting to enter the music industry is, simply put, to inspire (more)
Mary I know that I need to research this topic, obviously, and that I also need to stay true to myself, (more)
Mary I.E., I need to produce music that I love, irrespective of what an audience might be looking for (more)
Mary But if I AM to inspire the under-35 age groups, I need to get a real feel for what types of music can inspire them...
Kenna night all. see u on the boards and next week! Thanks for being a great Guest Corrinne, please come back and chat with us anytime!!
Mary and having grown up with Motown, Carole King, the San Francisco sound, etc. (more)
Mary I am probably inspired very differently from the younger genreation today.

Cupid1D ?
Mary Actually, maybe I should be more specific....
Corrinne I suppose you have to make the music that inspires you first before you can inspire anyone else. (more)
Corrinne yes?
............................qp left.............
............................qp joined.............
Mary can one inspire the "younger" generation today with Carole King-type music, or does it have to have a "darker" feel to it?
SAGE spoken true
Corrinne I know about wanting to reach the under 35 market, ie, the teens the young adults..
Corrinne (more)
Corrinne that's where a lot of people are trying to reach nowadays perhaps because there's so much of a market to reach

Mary Okay, Corrinne, we are of the same mindset. I'll keep researching and hopefully will (more)
JodiMuse Anyway... Mary... Might be a bit of a large question for this sort of a forum... I think that's definite a research topic all its own.
Mary find a way to connect with what people are looking for. Thank you.
Mary done.
JodiMuse Lisa, you're up?
LisaB If it's not too personal - what is happening with your tonos co-written song? By the way, congrats on it.
............................punkynick left.............

Corrinne thanks :)
JodiMuse Stinky? You still around?
stinky yep

stinky I have a Tonos question too

............................SAGE left.............
Corrinne I know what you mean. Sometimes, I want to be the only credit for a song. But co-writing has it's benefits too. You get more people working the song :)
Corrinne and more ideas
Corrinne done.
............................stinky left.............
............................stinky joined.............
Corrinne does that answer your question?
stinky so it's not that great for non playing writers is the way I took that
stinky or would you you reccomend it?
............................TIMO left.............
JodiMuse It depends, Stinky. Sometimes in order to get to the next level, you need to place a song. If you need to share credit in order to get that song placed... I suppose it could be worth it.
............................TIMO joined.............
Corrinne by non-playing writers do you mean writers that don't play an instrument?
stinky yep
stinky so on Tonos that is rather limiting it seems
Corrinne so you have the song in your head but need someone to record it?
stinky Oh I can do that, with those that do play, I just wondered about tonos specifically
stinky and I don't have to share credit with others
stinky I'm talking Tonos specifacly
JodiMuse Are you getting songs placed, Stinky? If you are, maybe that isn't the route for you.
Corrinne I'm not sure I really understand the question, are you talking about the contract that tonos gets writers to agree to before they submit a song?
stinky I was actually wondereing if I could get more or less free work tapes out of it, and maybe write on other folks songs just for fun now and then
............................danNsara left.............
LisaB ?
Corrinne i know that tonos has a tool on their site for finding collaborators
Corrinne (done)
stinky well thanks for trying, I probably didn't do a good job of asking my question
JodiMuse Actually, this sounds like a question you might want to specifically ask Tonos. If you're concerned about their contract, specifically.
Corrinne well stinky, I guess (more)
stinky I though maybe she had tried starting a project or two, or knew of those who don't play starting projects
Corrinne if you're asking specifically about the pre-recorded tracks that you have to write a song to (more)
............................danNsara joined.............
Corrinne I guess you can look at it this way...without the pre-recorded tracks, you would not be "inspired" to write your song, therfore, the credit should be shared. I mean there are a lot of writers out there who are just signed to publishing deals because they can produce good tracks. They (more)
Corrinne are "track writers" and they share in the writing credit for the song (more)
Corrinne even if they did not come up with the melody and lyrics
Corrinne depends on the contract you are workin within.
............................qp left.............
Corrinne done
stinky okay that did help, thanks Corrinne. it would be kinda hard for me to start a project there I guess
............................qp joined.............
JodiMuse It may not be for everyone.
stinky thanks, hit the next question, I've took enough time, thanks
JodiMuse lol No problem, stinky. (I still love typing that name....) TIMO, you're up.
TIMO What about contests that ask for entery fees persong? Are they ligit? Or just making money from submitters? Can you tell the difference?
JodiMuse Ooo. GOOD question.
Cupid1D the gloves are off now LOL!
JodiMuse lol
Corrinne If I were thinking of entering a song contest, I would check their track record, to see what previous winners have accomplished, check and see wha prizes they are offering, what type of sponsors they have, what exactly is their entry fee compared with a similar contest, and then compare all these and take it from there.
TIMO WOW! Great answer.
Corrinne some of these song contests listed in magazines etc. look really scary!
danNsara yes, very good answer Corrinne
danNsara Sara and I have been judges in a few contests and there are definite costs
Corrinne i mean, you have to read the fine print really carefully sometimes to make sure you are not signing away your life by joining one of these contests
danNsara paying the judges to evaluate songs
danNsara logging the entries
danNsara it just depends on the contest and their track record
Corrinne yup.
TIMO Thank You!
Corrinne you're welcome :)
JodiMuse And every one has a different purpose. Some focus on criques - some on placing the songs they like - some on getting you writing with other talented folks... and some, of course, giving you money. It depends on the contest.
JodiMuse Sorry - that's CRITIQUES.
danNsara and some even focus on taking your money :-)
JodiMuse (laugh!) Yup.
TIMO It costs enough trying to write the song I guess I ...
Corrinne It is pretty painful on the pocket nowadays to join a contest :) $40 or something like that per entry for some!!
TIMO just don't want to be lead down a bad path.
JodiMuse Understandable, TIMO. You really do need to be careful.

JodiMuse So how about the next question? Beth? You ready?
TIMO Careful but bold, or no one will hear my music.
JodiMuse Very true, TIMO.
JodiMuse Beth? Still here?
Beth Corrinne, since you write a lot without a co-writer, do you write your melodies first and then think of ideas for the lyrics
............................hatman left.............
............................frank joined.............
Beth sorry, Jodi, my computer got stuck....
JodiMuse No problem, Beth.
Corrinne a lot of the time I do write the melody first, then the lyrics. but sometimes, I get the idea for the lyric first and that inspires the music.
frank Hello people
JodiMuse Hi Frank. We have a guest speaker tonight. If you have a question, type a "?" and I'll let you know when to go ahead, ok?
Corrinne for example "same side of the moon" which you can hear from my web-site. I wrote that with the lyrics first.
frank ok
Beth which is easier to write first...
Corrinne done :)
............................qp left.............

JodiMuse lol I know about that problem, Cupid.
Corrinne I try to look back at my journal entries to get some ideas, or to do some object writing, (more)
Cupid1D I'm happily married, my job no longer bites, the weather has been great...it's bloody awful I tell ya
Corrinne or talk a walk, or read my "how to write lyrics" books! :)
Corrinne or check my thesauras or rhyming dictionary for ideas
Cupid1D now there's a thought
Corrinne and sometimes, I still get stuck! then I let the idea perhaps simmer for a while.
Corrinne ask a couple of fellow songwriters for feedback...
Cupid1D I've tried the walking which is my ol' stand by. At this point the dog runs and hides when the leash comes out so I've been walking alone
JodiMuse Just so you know, Cupid, there's a question about Writer's Block at the songwriting survey on The Muse's Muse - www.musesmuse.com/survey.html . Might help give you some ideas too.
Cupid1D poor littlr guy limping on one leg and favouring the other three
Corrinne or perhaps if I am REALLY stuck , as I was with a song recently, I'll pass it to a fellow co-writer to see what he/she comes up with
Cupid1D thanx jodi I'll check it out and thank you Corrine you've given me a number of great ideas

JodiMuse We have one more question folks, and then I think we're over for this session... LisaB? This is it... :-) You get to close us out.
Cupid1D I tend to write solo, co writes have been a less than fruitful avenue with me.
Corrinne great :)
LisaB Corrinne - I am being courted by a songplugger - how can I tell if the person is a songshark or not? They are a member of ASCAP and the Better Business Bureau has no complaints. What else can I do to find out about the person just short of hiring a private eye? Also I'm in NY and this person is in Nashville so we haven't met but have spoken on the phone. : )

JodiMuse Hey Poet. Welcome back. We're just about ending here. Lisa's asking the last question. Actually, I wonder if Danny & Sara might be able to help with that one too?
Corrinne Ask them for their credentials, ie. who have they successfully published, ask fellow songwriters if they have heard of this publisher......
Corrinne anyone else have ideas?
danNsara yes, who is it
danNsara we know most of the pluggers in town
ThePoet Thanks Jodi Needed a break
Cupid1D Find out who else the represent and get feed back from that person
stinky NSAI has a list of pluggers they aprove of I believe
danNsara I'd suggest checking to see what he's published or his company has
LisaB Thanks stinky and Dand and sara - I asked him what he has publ. and he said he almost had a Bette Midler song publ.
danNsara lol
Cupid1D LOL!
JodiMuse lol ALMOST don't cut it, Lisa.
Corrinne :)
LisaB Almost doesnt count!
danNsara I could tell you about 100 almosts we have too
............................qp left.............
ThePoet I do love the almosts in this world LOL
gstr8 good song though
LisaB He is asking 200 a month from me too
............................qp joined.............
Corrinne what?!!!!
Cupid1D yes and I almost had a song on a Rod Stewart disc last year
danNsara sorry, Lisa...I say no
ThePoet 200 a month for what??
LisaB Thanx
JodiMuse He wants money from you? Why?
danNsara for $200 a month, there are several established pluggers you could get
............................Singalong left.............
LisaB Like who?
ThePoet Like why?
danNsara ASCAP also maintains a list of independent pluggers
gstr8 Sounds like YOU are the only thing he wants to plug...lol..sorry
danNsara just because someone charges you money doesn't mean they can do anything with your songs
JodiMuse Uh... gstr8... Not really appropriate. ;-)
LisaB lol
gstr8 sorry..it was there...
danNsara A good independent plugger is difficult to get
JodiMuse (laugh)
danNsara because they don't want just any songs
ThePoet ?
TIMO If my music does not stand alone... It is not good enough... Plugger or no plugger.
gstr8 Amen
danNsara last note on this....some well established indie pluggers are: Sherrill Blackman, Shar'n Clark, Mark Meckel
Cupid1D Amen timo
JodiMuse Sorry, Poet. We're just ending off here... We've already kept Corrinne for over 2 hours. And by the way - Sherrill was a previous chat guest. Have a look at the log - http://www.musesmuse.com/chatlogs.html
LisaB Hey - I've been e-mailing Sherrill! he is the best
danNsara Yes, Lisa, he's an excellent plugger
ThePoet Thanks Jodi The question wasn't for Corrinne but for the group
LisaB Thanks guys for the help
JodiMuse March 27th, 2000 was when that chat log was... Sorry, Poet. If it's just for the group, ask away and I'll close out the log now. Thanks so much for being here, Corrinne! You were a great guest.
