CD REVIEW: Johnsmith - "Traveller"
By Stacey Board - 07/25/2002 - 06:32 PM EDT

Artist: Johnsmith
Album: "Traveller"
CD Review: This record is a fine example of some great contemporary folk music. Its gently beautiful storytelling sung with a smooth and lovely voice. There’s good reason that this artist has been performing on the mainstages of folk festivals around the country!

There’s a certain simple joy in the songs that comes from the fact that he seems sincerely in love with his craft. He strives to be a poet, a storyteller, an entertaining teacher, and he manages to do it all well.

Yes you’ll hear some expected folk instruments; penny whistle, violin and upright bass, but – gasp – you’ll also hear some drums and electric guitar! Don’t think because I call it folk that you’re going to be reaching for the ‘snooze’ button. This is engaging songwriting done by an expert in his craft.

My personal favorite cut is “Part Time Angels”. He’s not saying something completely new, but he’s saying it in a way that cuts through the static and manages to touch you. Johnsmith has created some beautiful storysongs and put them together in a gorgeously produced collection.
