CD REVIEW: PC Munoz and the Amen Corner, "A Good Deed in a Weary World"
By David Lockeretz - 12/05/2002 - 01:58 AM EST

Artist: PC Munoz and the Amen Corner
Album: "A Good Deed in a Weary World"
CD Review: PC Munoz's electic group proves that music doesn't have to be cynical, complex or dark to have a lasting impact. With spiritually inspiring lyrics that do anything but preach, and grooves that show a wide variety of influences from urban soul to R&B to gospel to country, Munoz has staked his claim as an important figure on the contemporary West Coast scene.

Munoz utilizes a variety of sonic textures and formats, including commentary from random people and childrens' chorus. Munoz's spoken word and singing style is understated yet confident, the mark of a performer who knows what he has to offer and doesn't feel the need to cater to the trends of the month. You get the idea that he has spent more time listening to Earth, Wind & Fire and maybe even Gil Scott-Heron than he has watching MTV's "Cribs." The musicianship is competent too, featuring tight grooves from drummer Andrew Griffin and bassist Stephen Smith, and strong backup and lead vocals from Laynee.

The result is a document that is uplifting and thought-provking. Whether it's the folksy acoustic guitar of "The Last Campfire Song", the seamy, urban R&B of "Skin City", the soulful introspection of "Wages of Sin" or the gospel influence of "I've Been Loved", this CD has something to offer everyone.
