CD REVIEW: Jon Nicol – “St. Laundromat”
By Stacey Board - 04/22/2003 - 06:26 PM EDT

Artist: Jon Nicol
Album: “St. Laundromat”
CD Review: “St. Laundromat” is nice contemporary folk/pop with pleasantly unpredictable melodies. The lyrical content is largely Christian and spiritual in its message and perspective. But the songs are about experiences that many people could relate to, having experienced or observed them regardless of their belief system. Meaning: Its NOT full of bible clichés and I did NOT feel “preached to”.

The instrumentation is recognizable contemporary folk, with acoustic guitars, djembe, and subtle percussion. The accompanying players are all solid and the recording quality and production are all top notch.

In particular, Jon’s acoustic guitar playing is quite good and Danica Allen’s backing vocals really stand out. Her high sweet voice is a great accent and contrast to Jon’s ‘sandier’ vocals. The title track is one of the strongest songs on the CD in my opinion. Lyrically, its got some great humor that holds an interesting question each of us could ask ourselves.

“St. Laundromat” is enjoyable due to Jon’s talent for appealing melodies, the great accompaniment and excellent overall quality of arrangements and recording. Those who find special connection with Jon’s spiritual message will find even deeper enjoyment with this record.
