By Gian F - 04/20/2004 - 01:21 AM EDT
Artist: David Boyles
Album: "Bedroom Demos"
CD Review:
Genre: AC/AA/R&B Sounds Like: Thicke Technical Grade: 7 Production/Musicianship Grade: 7 Commercial Value: 7 Overall Talent Level: 7 Songwriting Skills: 7 Performance Skill: 7 Best Songs: Better Life, Alone, Insecurity, Right Back, It's On Weakness: Needs to incorporate more background vocals - especially on hooks CD Review: David Boyles is one talented guy. I'm not just talking about him as a singer/songwriter/musician, I'm talking about him as a producer. The quality and clarity of sound that he was able to get from this entire project on a two track is noteworthy if not amazing.
As a singer/songwriter/musician, his talents deserve attention as well. With songs that are well-structured, he effortlessly captures the feel and flavor of a live performance on every track. The songs "Seven Ways" and "It's On," are reminiscent of the sound and musical attitude made popular by Prince and his Minneapolis disciples, but David's real talents lie within his vocal phrasing, energy, and personality.
Because his style is so distinctive, the songs collectively take on a cohesive quality that makes them easy to listen to; which makes selecting the most "commercial" songs difficult...but not impossible. How do you do it? By not listening to the CD and letting the songs linger in your subconscious. Those would be "Better Life" and "Alone."
This project would have received higher scores in every category if there were more background vocals to give the tracks a fuller, richer sound...but then again, these are bedroom demos, so perhaps they will be added later.
Advice: Come out of the closet - literally. I (and other music lovers) would like to hear your talents in a fulll production.
