CD REVIEW: A Girl Named Jaen– “dusk”
By Stacey Board - 07/18/2004 - 03:40 PM EDT

Artist: Band: A Girl Named Jaen
Album: “dusk”
CD Review: If you like the giant pop divas of the day you will be right at home here. You will hear the same singing style and all the familiar production tools. A Girl Named Jaen is doing all the right things to get nominated for “Next Miss Thang”.

Imagine someone with a touch of Britney and Christina and a bit of the Alanis singing edge here and there and you have a good idea what a girl named Jaen sounds like. If you like loops and dance beats, this will be a CD you will want to add to your collection. This CD certainly sounds as good as anything Britney or Christina has put out there this year.

My beef is that it seems in all these songs the production is center stage. Any melody, singing or lyrical content is just buried. The production doesn’t make room for any emotional connection or construction in the songs. The overall effect for me was style over substance.

I was left with the impression of listening to a talented producer who as almost an afterthought came up with the idea of having a singer and songwriter add some singing and lyrics to his compositions. And that’s a shame because Jaen should be up front, not the production.

If you like loops and dance beats and the ever present current female singing style, this will be a CD you will want to add to your collection.
