CD REVIEW: Claire Moss - Self-Titled EP
By Steve Allat - 02/24/2005 - 04:10 AM EST

Artist: Claire Moss
Album: Self-Titled EP
CD Review: Label: Independent
Tracks: 5
Released: 2004
For Fans Of: Alanis Morissette, Dashboard Confessional
Fav Tracks: Just Let Go, Time, Fan

For a young woman who recently turned 20, Claire has definitely got time on her side, despite her appeal that 'there is no time' on the opening track of her debut EP. She sounds a bit beyond her years a few times on the CD, but for the most part sounds exactly like she should at her age, expressing herself thoughtfully and with great confidence & attitude over all 5 tracks. Speaking to a new generation of listening used to hearing this music from the guys, Claire aims to rock them right into their place by doing what they do, her way.

The sound is a bit cliché, but then she says herself that her style will remind you of guy-fronted 'emo' bands like Dashboard Confessional, Brand New, Switchfoot and Hoobastank. My overall impression is that this could be a soundtrack to the late teens years of most of today's youth, so she should find an audience for her outpourings.

For the most part the music is hard, fast and crunches along favourably. Her voice stands above the music and is strong & sure. She can speak her parts, she can sing capably and yes, she can scream. But it's what she's saying that in this case is equally as important. She has a heartfelt emotion in her voice that tells you she means to really tell you something. It makes listening all the more worthwhile.

Solid backup for Claire's words and music is provided in the form of Gregg Bissonette on drums and Jimmy Johnson on bass. Claire herself wrote the lyrics, co-wrote the music and plays piano.

In checking out her current situation, I read that she is recording another EP due out in April which I'll look forward to listening to. I hope she'll be sticking to her guns and yet improving by honing her sound and continuing to grow as a songwriter in an effort to set herself apart from her peers just a bit more.

Keep it coming Claire, we're listening.
