CD Review:
Soundtrack = songs. Score = underscore by composer. This is the soundtrack to Crime and Punishment, a movie (well, a cd anyway) focusing on the youth of America. Those over 30 need not apply. You'll find no wimpy NSYNC or Billy Joel in this batch. Grab your hat and fly and try keeping up with Extra Fancy doing their 'Sinnerman', one of the sharpest, quickest, hillbilliest tracks here. Then go back to the front for some Modest Mouse, as they expound like lazy teens on 'Trailer Trash'. And I must say, their grinding guitars and wasted, monotone drone sure sets the garbage-drenched stage for what they talk about.

One song I dig the most has to be 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' by Far. It starts out instrumental, and I've got No idea what it means. But when the guitar cranks finally to life, and the voices start repeating the title, well well, I've still got no idea what it means. But that's the beauty of it. When the music plays, I see a painting sitting out in the rain, the image washing away, and no one's sad that the picture is lost forever, because no one sees the tragedy. Okay, nothing to do with the song. But that's what my heart says.

A dozen songs that means 12 from the likes of Meat Puppets, Frank Black, The Toadies (their 'Mister Love' rocks to hang banging heights), Joey Santiago, Sound Furnace and the like. It speaks to you. It might shout. It might slur. But the statements are bold, wicked, maybe club-footed, and always impossible to play while reading.
