CD Review: This disc shows the wonder and richness that can come from just guitar and voice. On I Remember You, Patti Cathcart’s singing is both sultry and soaring, and Tuck Andress’ guitar is crisp and clean. Here, they lend their jazz/soul vibe to 10 classic songs.

Stripped to their bare essence, these standards shine anew. “I Remember You” and “Deed I Do” bop along to a finger-snapping groove. “Deed I Do” in particular is nifty – Tuck casually tosses around chords and notes behind Patti’s playful delivery.

“The Very Thought Of You” and “Old Devil Moon” bounce at a delightfully brisk pace. “Old Devil Moon” rocks – it’s darn close to Etta James-style blues.

“In A Sentimental Mood” dances intimately, like an embracing couple swaying alone on a moonlit balcony. The set-closing “With a Song In My Heart” is also wistful and pretty. The album’s other slow number, “When I Fall In Love With You,” boasts some striking chord changes.

One of the most remarkable tracks is “A Foggy Day,” which starts introspectively and then rockets into a scat-singing and quick-picking tour de force. “Embraceable You” is another favorite – Patti’s voice is sexy as can be, and Tuck nails his solo.

This duo has been making music for years, and I had only heard them sporadically. Now, thanks to I Remember You, I’ll be sure to check out Tuck and Patti’s back catalog.
