CD REVIEW: Danan Healy - Christmas Time Rocks
By Reid Murray - 12/14/2007 - 06:45 PM EST

Artist: Danan Healy
Album: Christmas Time Rocks
Genre: Holiday
Technical Grade: 6/10
Production/Musicianship Grade: 7/10
Best Songs: Christmas Time Rocks, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
CD Review: Tis’ the Christmas season and tis’ the time when we hear Christmas carols drifting through town. Danan Healy and her band made a Christmas album called, “Christmas Time Rocks.” Healy has a suitable voice for Christmas songs, singing in a long drawn out style, to a more operatic voice.

Surprisingly, the first song of the album is a reggae type original, sprinkled with Christmas lyrics of shopping, family, and Santa. It sounds like Healy recalls child hood memories such as being embarrassed by what visiting family have to say round the dinner table.

The rest of the album is quite different musically. The band has a jazzy feel with an upright bass, keyboards, and a little brushes on the snare.

Danan Healy has another original piece on the album that’s way slower than the reggae song, called “The One.” It’s a slow, full-bodied song that could maybe be used as a soundtrack for a movie.

I don’t listen to much holiday music, but I wouldn’t mind hearing Healy’s slower rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” while picking out a Christmas tree.
