CD Review: Delaney Gibson is back with a strong follow up to her debut album, The Worst Kind Of Way. Hurricanes And Forget Me Nots shows that the excellence of her first album was no fluke. Gibson's remarkable voice shines again and once again she's surrounded by a very strong supporting cast. Produced by Aaron Goldberg and Chris Jay, Gibson is also joined by Armand John Anthony on guitars, Kai Dodson on electric bass, and Mike Milligan on drums. Laura Mihalka played cello, Sam Bolle added upright bass, and Dan Clark played a variety of keyboards.

Gibson's songwriting skills show up again on Hurricanes And Forget Me Nots. She has songwriter credit on every song and shares some songwriting duties with Chris Jay. The first cut, Paper Boats, bears this out. "Fall apart like a landslide, Wash away with the high tide, Have you ever seen an island disappear." Gibson writes of lost love as well as anyone and sings it with a conviction that is heart wrenching. The second cut, La-Di-Da has been featured on The Bad Girls television show. A bouncy tune, it displays the versatility of Gibson's songwriting and a distinctly different mood from Paper Boats. Armand John Anthony provides a very tasty guitar solo.

Kill Me Now is one of my favorite cuts on Hurricanes And Forget Me Nots. Mikhalka brings a very nice cello counterpoint to Anthony's acoustic fingerpicking. Gibson's vocal has an ethereal quality as she sings, "I wrote you a beautiful song, You said the chords didn't belong, and my verses needed some structure. I think it just means you love her."

Hurricanes And Forget Me Nots is filled with musical gems. Good Company,Careful, the list goes on. Delaney's songwriting is in top form, the band is impressively tight, the arrangements and production are sterling, and Gibson's voice is the glue that holds it altogether. When I reviewed her first album, I said that Delaney Gibson was a star on the rise, a voice to be reckoned with. I'm convinced beyond any doubt.
