CD Review: Ok, who are these guys? Heavy Tin is back with a quick follow-up to their amazing debut, Fused Jazz. ReFused is the new release from this explosively talented joining of musical souls. B. R. Pearson on piano and the ever fabulous Izzie Real on bass have added drummer, Viktor Lorak for this juicy offering. There are too many good tunes to mention here but Sweet Beet is a perfectly balanced blend of these three. Lorak provides just enough propulsion and accent to supplement the interplay between Pearson and Real. Bop Bomb had me moving in my chair. Cloud 99 is another cut that really showcases the synergy of these three talented musicians. Moog Town just made me smile. Heavy Tin became one of my favorite jazz bands with the release of their first CD, Fused Jazz. Their muscular brand of jazz and the interplay between Real on bass and Pearson on piano was, and is, unique and original. The addition of Lorak has added another layer to the sound of the group. ReFused is an interesting, multidimensional work. Pearson penned all the tunes here, as in the first release. Maybe itís the tunes, maybe itís the addition of Lorak but this CD seems like harder bop, a harder edge. Which is all good for me. If you have not found Heavy Tinís first CD, Fused Jazz, then go for a two-fer and pick up ReFused also. You wonít regret it.
