CD Review: Minneapolis based Alternative Pop “Radio Drive" release their latest CD entailed This is Our Time in 2012 . Kevin Gullikson is no stranger to the Music Business having received critical acclaim from around the globe and extensive airplay on online, college and indie stations in the U.S., Canada and Europe. His previous release Life Today also hit the Top 40 charts on CJSW Radio in Calgary, Canada.

The CD kicks things off with “Rising” a rocking intro piece that flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition with its driving rock rhythm, melodic rhythm guitar and hypnotic vocal vibe from Gullikson. Track 2 “Borders” is an upbeat follow up piece that serves up slow grooving rock groove against rocked out and hooky guitar groove and thought provoking lyrical content. Track 3 the title track “This is Our Time” shifts gears a bit with its methodical musical build eventually leading into a power ballad of sorts with lyrics and subject matter that is thought provoking and vocal that are heartfelt. The CD makes a solid first impression dishing out 3 impressive songs in a row. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear many different musical textures reminiscent of such acts like Radiohead, Psychedelic Furs, The White Stripes, The White Stripes and Modest Mouse. For the record Radio Drive’s sound is extremely hard to pigeonhole. The music itself is an impressive blend of progressive rock and even has a progressive aftertaste that is extremely dynamic and melodic in nature. Gullikson’s voice goes down smooth and is full of passion, reckless abandon and bold honesty. The musicianship from this band is top flight with impressive solo guitar work and a rhythm section that push the natural accents well. The songs themselves are extremely dynamic and highly melodic. The vocal hooks are masterful and effective. Each song possessing a unique personality, flair and signature groove. From striking “Never” to mesmerizing “Light” to rocking “Money You Don’t Own Me” to dynamic “New Direction” to heartfelt “Life is For Living”  and “I Believe in You” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with Track 11 “Hardwired” the perfect finale statement for a CD of this caliber.

This is not the best mix I’ve ever heard. The overall sound quality is a bit muddy and murky thus giving the CD a dated and lack luster sound quality. Though this songwriting is amazing and the songs and performances makes its point – it simply falls short when compared to other world class releases within the genera. All Songs over 3.5 minutes tend to drag you to the finish line. I fully realize this is a subjective art form but many of the aforementioned issues do affect the CD’s overall marketability.

Overall This is Our Time by “Radio Drive” is a very consistent and entertaining catalogue of music. It’s strong suit – the amazing amount of melody, originality and vocal passion Gullikson brings to the table.  The songwriting is world class and the messages are passionate and powerful. Indeed Kevin Gullikson is a driven-marquee artist and is clarley the mastermind behind all that is "Radio Drive."
