CD Review:
Scufflegrit is a duo consisting of two good old boys from North Alabama, Jared Chaffin and Matt Alston. Their new release, Lyin', Stealin', and Litterin' also features Kacie Chaffin on vocal harmony and Mike Frye on drums. Jared Chaffin plays rhythm guitar and sings while Matt Alston plays lead guitar, bass, and harmonica as well as providing vocals.
One of my favorite cuts on the CD is Fly. The boys blends some nice guitar work with smooth country style vocals for a pleasant listen. Guin is also a very nice cut about a small town. Alston's bluesy guitar lead complements a smoky vocal. Southern Boys is a moonshine story about stealing from daddy's still.
Lyin', Stealin', and Litterin' is front porch music, best enjoyed with a very cold beer on one of those very hot days that are commonplace in Alabama. The boys don't break a lot of new ground with Lyin', Stealin', and Litterin' but their music is an authentic slice of life that is unique to the Southern United States. That's music that speaks to my roots and to my heart.
