CD Review:

Singer/songwriter/musician Steven James King sent in a CD that promises “alternative pop/rock without the gimmicks or hype.” Does it deliver on that promise? Absolutely. All the songs make an individual artistic statement while cohesively contributing to the strength of the whole project. It’s a musician’s CD that will appeal equally to music lovers, songwriters, and industry folks alike.

The opening track, the ambient “Maple Tops,” features a pulsating baseline and Steven’s spoken vocals that take flight and transform into a chorus that you look forward to hearing again, and again. It sets the organic musical tone and direction of the project beautifully, but it’s the MTV friendly “Hilaina” that serves as the most commercial and radio ready track with its bouncing baseline, in the pocket vocals, and inescapable hook that sneaks up on you. It’s the gem of this project and is serviceable to radio, tv, and film.

Other stand out tracks include the Police inspired “The Sun” which best highlight Steven’s musical expertise and creative ingenuity. It’s a haunting track that lingers in your mind with just one listen and features a well-placed soaring guitar solo that music lovers crave and industry professionals will applaud. Also not to be overlooked, “The Honest Truth,” which can be used as the perfect departure song for guys exiting (or thinking of exiting) a relationship – in an honest and dignified way, of course.
