CD Review: Acoustic Singer/Songwriter Tony Desimone releases his latest CD entitled “The Second Time Around” in 2011. This is his third release to date and he hails from Princeton New Jersey.

The CD gently takes flight with “A Perfect Day” a smooth flowing intro piece that serves up delicate acoustic guitar groove against inviting Hammond Organ Accents against passionate vocals from Desimone. This first is quite dynamic as it flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. Track 2 “The Second Time Around” shifts gears a bit with it’s heartfelt vocal delivery from Desimone against steady flowing rhythm, smooth melodic guitar accents all making for an impressive follow up ballad. Track 3 “High on You” Keeps thing moving in the right direction with its striking vocal intro, gradually building into an impressive ballad with grad slam chorus and passionate vocal finale. The CD makes a great first impression dashing out 3 solid songs in a row. The musicianship of everyone involved is clearly above the bar. Along the way you will notice lush instrumentation with things like acoustic jazz guitar, impressive guitar licks and solos, Hammond Organ, Violin painted against the 4 piece standard. Now turning our attention over to Desimone - as for his vocal abilities, his voice works extremely well within the confines of this catalogue. His voice goes down smooth and fills the space peacefully and unobtrusively. I suspect some of his vocal influences are Jason Mraz, Daren Hayes (SavageGarden) and Michael Buble. All songs are extremely well crafted and consistent across the board. This CD from Tony Desimone delivers 10 solid tracks all providing thought provoking wisdom with messages that are uplifting, passionate and positive. From heartfelt “Blue” and “Mississippi Burning”, to passionate “Once in a Lifetime” to rocking “Two Steps Back to You” and upbeat “Easy Love” and “Going to California” this CD pretty much has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with track 10: “River Mercy” the perfect finale statement for a CD of this caliber.

It’s had to find any serious weaknesses with this CD. I Will however add that all songs over 4 minutes tend to drag you to the finish line. The mix (especially vocals) are a like a bold font in your face. These types of mixes are becoming more and more prevalent these days and are really designed to maximize radio marketability. However at the end of the day these mixes are a real wear on the ears especially if you listen to the album from start to finish. Over time it’s comparable to a radio commercial. I also wish Desimone would utilize more vocal harmonies. This would mix up the vocal delivery a bit more making it less repetitive over time.

From start to finish “Second Time Around” is an impressive collection of music from Tony Desimone. The music is highly passionate, uplifting, and extremely passionate. The songwriting – world class, all consistent musical experiences, each one possessing a unique personality, flair, and signature groove. Note for note, song for song there isn’t really weak piece on this entire CD. The writing and playing abilities of Tony Desimone and his band are rock solid, the melodies are well crafted, and the lyrical content is packed to the hilt with conventional wisdom and messages of hope, love and the passion of life itself.
