CD REVIEW: Wake Up Jonny - 4 song demo
By Ben Ohmart - 05/21/2007 - 10:34 AM EDT

Artist: Band: Wake Up Jonny
Genre: Rock
CD Review:
I prefer WUJ to many of the cdrs that come through here, because they are serious in the attainment of fun as a means to an evening. Yep, they are club dwellers who have already played more venues than McDonald's has limp fries. The music is great, esp. if you grew up like me on the sexy Bangles sound; you'll hear an immediate likeness from lead singer Lauren Beachak. She holds her notes like a kitten, both vulnerable and ready to scratch if you get too close. I'd really never call them alternative, because their basis is non-loud, non-annoying rock that was born in the 80s; the sort that rips off the spirit of punk without drowning any politicians, and keeps the Tune in mind, not the vague motif of a song germ. A lick, a melody, and Lauren rolls with the words in that big sister way of hers. At live shows, they seem to cover everyone (and The Bangles wasn't listed?) from The Cars to Beatles. Versatile group, with the bass player from 2 Live Jews. Now don't you feel like breaking into cdbaby.com and buying something sweet?
