CD REVIEW: Patti Witten - Land of Souvenirs
By Ben Ohmart - 05/21/2007 - 10:34 AM EDT

Artist: Patti Witten
Website: http://www.pattiwitten.com/
Genre: Folk
CD Review:
Starts off with 'Whispers', so listen carefully and you may hear 'you could ask him for a light / you could touch him lightly on the hand / as the flame comes up, explodes and dims / on the promise of a man / you could wear your tightest constant / you could tell the secret book / that ends in letters of condolences / I wonder what he took.' That's the kinda pleasant poetry you're up against, so don't expect to keep this one on in the back as background noise.

'Land of Souvenirs' was built for middle-class consumption. It paints a picture, a good release for the singer and the listener both. 'at night he goes to Bait and Video / you got your bait, your videos and your mickey ears / cigarettes and tv guides, slim jims and bug lights / down here in the land of souvenirs'.

Alternative and bluesy and folk induced and pieces of pop and acoustic rock. Plus there's just too much to quote from this album. Patti is a Very good lyricist who not only has a lot to say, but has figured out a musical way of letting all the demons out in such a way that they don't give you the blues till next Tuesday. Quite a feat. Girl + guitar = good.
