Q&A: Sending CD's out for promotion? Is this really necessary?
By John Taglieri - 06/06/2007 - 10:53 AM EDT

Hi John,

I have a question after reading some of your articles about sending cds to websites to review. Do you send the actual cd or download it onto their site? I can't imagine sending a cd to every site that offers to review music...we would all go broke in a hurry, right?

I enjoy your articles on th Muse page very much....keep up the good work and best of "luck" to you in your endeavors!

Thank you for your time.

Hey George! Thanks for the reply and for the kind words about my articles. That means a lot to me.

As far as sending CD's to each website, yep, that's exactly what you have to do. If you send uploaded files to them, you risk the quality not being quite what the CD will offer, and this can have an adverse reaction on your review.

When I had my CD's made, I knew right from the start that I was going to give a lot away for promotional reasons. You have to figure that into your budget just the same as you would figure on taking out ads or hiring a publicist. Yes, you give a lot of CD's away, but if the review sells a few CD's for you, then your free CD money was well spent. It's a give and take. But as I said in the article also, you have to be a bit choosy in the sites you send to and make sure that they are going to give you the most bang for your buck, so to speak. Sites that don't cater to your genre are not worth it, unless they are big sites that get enough hits to warrant the review. There are thousands of sites out there, so do your homework and figure out where your money, in this case the free CD, will be best spent.

I hope this helped you and thanks again for reading the article!
